Description: Emma Cheves Wilkins played a pivotal role of the art development in Savannah, Georgia during the thirties and forties. Her studies in Paris led her to influence many other local Savannah artists such as Hattie Saussy and Augusta Oelschig. She is a member of the Aesthetic Movement or “ Art for Art’s Sake”. Her works of art are highly collectible because she was not as prolific as her students that she continually pressed to paint. It is rare that this example of art is available, for most reside in a number of respected museums and with avid art collectors of Women of the Arts.
This painting has been pampered all its life and is in excellent untouched condition. The canvas size is 24” X 26”. The gilded white washed frame was most likely applied during the fifties.
Wilkins is a listed artist in such publications as “Art Across America “(Central/South), “Dictionary of Women Artists” ,”Who's Who in American Art”, and “Davenport's Art Reference”.
