We have an extremely fine and very rare Chippendale, highly figured maple slant top desk or bureau. It is believed to be made by one of the Bedford, New Hampshire cabinet makers named Dunlap. We are not sure whether it is John or his father Samuel. There were others in the Dunlap family of Chester and Salisbury , Samuel Jr. and Samuel, III. This desk is too early for the latter Samuel.
The wonderfully figured Maple and white Pine are in great condition with very few repairs . The center Chippendale shell carving is exquisite. Eight interior drawers are perfect examples of John Dunlap's hand. All the brass hardware is original, and all four feet are original. It's in wonderful condition. The finish is not the first, but appears to be an old hand rubbed shellac finish.
